How much RHTP money did each state get?

Every approved state received a first-year RHTP award averaging about $200 million, ranging from roughly $147 million (New Jersey) to $281 million (Texas). Half of each year's $10 billion is shared equally (about $100 million per state) and half follows a formula based on rural population and facility need.

The two-part formula

Each year's $10 billion splits in half. The first half is distributed equally, giving every approved state a baseline of roughly $100 million. The second half is allocated by CMS using rural population, the proportion of rural health facilities, and the situation of certain hospitals.

Why amounts differ

States with larger rural populations and more rural facilities draw more of the formula half, which is why first-year totals range from about $147 million to $281 million even though the equal share is identical for everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Do these amounts repeat every year?
The equal share recurs annually; the formula portion can shift with CMS's factors, but the overall structure holds across FY2026–FY2030.
Where can I see my state's award?
